Preparing Future Mathematics Faculty

Program Description

Shaping the Preparation of Future Mathematics Faculty: A Preparing Future Faculty Program
A one year program whose focus is to prepare graduate students pursuing careers in mathematics instruction.
The program will work with a cluster of partner departments at nearby colleges and universities. The objective is to provide graduate students a direct experience with faculty work in different kinds of post-secondary institutions. Our partners are Scottsdale Community College, ASU West, Harvey Mudd College, ASU Polytechnic, Northern Arizona University, and the Institute for Strengthening Understanding of Mathematics and Science at ASU (SUMS Insitute). The program aims to increase students' appreciation of different faculty roles at different institutions through a semester long exploratory phase, characterized by campus visits, lectures and panel discussions and a participatory semester where students do projects representative of faculty work at the partner campuses.

The program is supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation through the American Mathematical Society and funds from the Department of Mathematics and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at ASU.
