Dr. Emily Stone
On Friday February 16 the PFMF group attended a presentation by Dr. Emily Stone professor of Applied Mathematics at Utah State University. Dr. Stone obtained her bachelors degree in Physics from UC Santa Cruz, and then went on to get her doctorate in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at Cornell. She had a two year postdoc in Europe, and was a visiting professor of mathematics at Arizona State University for one year. She described her history in order for us to see the types of accomplishments one can do in order to succeed in a teaching/research career. She has applied for NSF grants almost every year since she began teaching at USU. She has gotten a few grants on her own and a couple in collaboration with others from Statistics and Physics. Dr. Stone has also recieved a grant to start an Industrial Math masters degree at Utah State. The program officially started this year but unofficially two students, who have recently graduated, participated in its early stages. At this time Dr. Stone and her family are in Seattle where she is working at Boeing. This opportunity is enabling her to find out more about the non-linear dynamics that is being studied there and to help secure some internships for the students in the Industrial Math program at USU.
