Summer REU Program at NAU

Professor Blows visited with us today about NAU's summer REU
program.
This is a nationwide program that runs during June and
July. Undergraduate
students (typically juniors and seniors) from colleges and
universities across the
country apply to this program. Only six will be accepted.
These six students
will pair up, and be assigned to one of three members of
NAU's mathematics
faculty. During the
first couple of weeks of the program, the faculty members
try to bring the students up to speed on their research
before giving them
their own projects to work on.
It is during this "training stage" that most of us
in PFMF thought we could
offer the most help.
Dr. Armbruster suggested that we might be able to help
with instruction in our various areas of mathematics, or
giving a workshop in
Latec or PowerPoint.
It was also suggested that we simply go to talk to the
students, let them know what life is like in graduate
school, and possibly give
a presentation of our own research.
