Ana Kupresanin form the Math Department was interviewed by our Department chair Dr. Andrew Bremner for a Statistics Faculty position. She was asked a series of questions, about her educational background, dissertation, research, teaching and statistical consulting background. Some of the questions were:
Background, research, dissertation:
- What kind of background, coursework do you have in statistics?
- What was the subject of your dissertation?
- How did you get interested in statistics?
- Other than your dissertation, what other research have you been involved
with?
- What direction do you see your research growing?
- Do you have theoretical or applied motivations?
- What is your prefered workload in terms of teaching and research?
- Do you prefer to work with others or alone?
Teaching:
- What kind of prior teaching experience do you have?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses in teaching?
- What is your approach to teaching students with minimal mathematical
background?
- What kind of Statistics courses are you interested in teaching in
the future?
- What courses are you interested in developing?
- What kind of computer packages are you interested in using, introducing?
Consulting:
- What kind of statistical consulting experience do you have?
- How much consulting are you planning to do outside the department?
- Do you have any experience working with people from other disciplines?
Concluding questions:
- Anything you would like to add about yourself?
- Do you have any questions for us?
We also had a discussion about phone interviews. Some of the advice
that was given:
- collect everything (CV, teaching statement, evaluations etc) in front
of you
- write down questions as they ask them
- take notes
- clarify questions if not sure
