Notes by Dave Fishman
The PFMF gang gathered to discuss the role of faculty in the ASU math department. We were joined by Andrew Bremner, the chair of the department, and Professor Jack Spielberg, a member of the Personnel Committee. During the two-hour meeting we talked about hiring procedures, job responsibilities, performance evaluations, and what is necessary for promotion.
When first applying to a research math department like the one at ASU, one or two years of post-doctoral experience can be extremely valuable. Letters of reference are very important, and may even be considered the most crucial part of the application process. Being well prepared at the interview, and asking intelligent questions about the department, can also be very beneficial.
After being hired as an assistant professor at ASU, one would be required to devote about 40% of their time to research, 40% to teaching, and 20% to service (which includes working on committees like the Personnel Committee). There is a six-year probation period during which the professor’s abilities in these three categories will be closely evaluated. The specific details of the evaluation process and full expectations can be found in the Department Bylaws. After this six-year period, the professor can now be considered for promotion and tenure.
We would like to thank Dr. Bremner and Dr. Spielberg for taking the time to provide us with this very valuable insight into faculty life at the ASU mathematics department.
