Master of Natural Sciences with High School Certification

Standard MNS program:
- 24 credit hours of Mathematics or Statistics courses
- 12 credit hours of graduate level courses outside the Math. Dept.
- 2 Qualifying exams
- no thesis
New Program
Assumptions
- High School Mathematics teachers with a strong mathematics background are in high demand.
- There is a student population with a HS career goal interested in more mathematics courses and fewer education courses.
Environment
- The Arizona Department of Education changed the certification rules for High School teachers from course based to competency based.
- Strong TA training program:
- initial TA training workshop
- continuous training through coordination meetings and workshops.
- Support of the College of Education
Master of Natural Sciences with High School Certification
- 24 credit hours of Mathematics or Statistics courses
- Additional requirements:
- 1 course in mathematics education in the Department of Mathematics
- 2 courses in the College of Education
- 8 weeks of High School internship
- a minimum of 3 semesters of teaching in the Math Department
- TA training workshops
- 2 Qualifying exams
- no thesis
