Campus Interview (by Rama Chidambaram)
Usual steps for a campus interview:
1. Getting a call for a campus interview over phone/e-mail.
2. Make a travel arrangement.
- Confirm the interview date. If there is any choice, pick the later date.
- Go at least a day in advance.
- Keep the last day open for the whole day. Do not give an impression you are hurrying back.
- Check the ticket price.
- Reminder: The expenses would be reimbursed later. So, keep all the tickets/boarding pass/receipts.
3. Find out about the interview process.
- 1- or 2-day interview process
- Research presentation: Audience, Technical reqirements - overhead projector,
etc. (But, recommend not to assume any would work on the day. So, prepare
print-out, etc.), Time frame (Never go overtime)
- Teaching presentation: Audience, Technical facilities - calculator, etc., Time
frame, Book/Material used for the presentation
- What the college is pround of
(If there is a particular person you want to have, make sure it happens.)
4. Preparing for the interview
- Talks: Research and Teaching
- Clothing: Formal dress strongly recommended (Also, consider the temperature)
- Learn
abou the department/college and faculty: (i) Faculty name and research
area, (ii) Courses taught, and (iii) Graduate program
- Questions to expect:
- Research - publications (present and future), research (current
and plan), names of prominent researchers working in your area, computer/lab
requirements, funcs/grants
- Teaching - courses you want/can teach, courses you do not want
to teach, courses you can develop/add to, teaching style/philosophy, use
of technology (check the college's status, be openminded), undergraduate
research experiences
- General - what you can bring to the department, why you have chosen to apply to the
college, your ideal work place, library requirement, funds (Though it is
not legal, if asked about the spouse, either no answer or just indicate there
is no problem.)
- Questions to ask:
- Faculty - living expenses, life outside campus, travel support, summer support, health benefits, library facilities
- Committee
- tenure track evaluation process (R+T+S percentages), professional development,
roll of the new faculty in the department
- Chair (General + Exit Interview) - graduate program, avenues for
inter disciplinary research, travel money, start up money, computing facilities
(hardware resources, software license), expected time frame to hear back
from them
- Dean - role of the Math Dept.in the college/university, interdisciplinary
research, future plans for the university/department, consulting opportunities
- Food: Bring your own quick food with you (You might not have time to really eat, answering questions).
Writing Curriculum Vitae
The C.V. of Dr. Kaliszewski and Dr. Gelb were presented as samples.
- Put important (relevant/impressive) topics early on the pages.
- Make it precise; but, make sure to list the teaching experience (note
that it is not always true that being TA means taking the full responsibility
of the course you teach like in ASU), publications, research, etc.
