SUMS Institute and the Math Science Honors Program

Types of College Preparation Programs:

 

Academic Support

 

·       Pipeline Courses – Math and science courses to prepare students for standardized testing, college transcripts, and skills to succeed at the college level

·       Study Skills –Note-taking, homework completion, and time management skills

·       Test Preparation – Help gain admittance to higher education, provides individual attention to skills in subject areas

 

Social Support

 

·       Involve participants and parents in program procedures and policies

·       Allow students to set up networks for academic and social needs

·       Focus on low-income and “at-risk” students

·       Utilize community surroundings and programs

 

Financial Support

 

·       Scholarships, stipends, and grants act as incentives to keep students in  school

·       Dedicate time to the process of applying for financial aid which includes deadlines, paperwork, and financial aid counselors

 

Statistics on Race vs. Coursework in School:

 

·       35% of Latinos are enrolled in course work which allows them to go to college while 50% are not.  There is a 30% drop-out rate for Latinos.

·       50% of Whites are enrolled in a curriculum that prepares them for college while 39% are not.  There is only a 8% drop-out rate for Whites.

·       43% of African-Americans are enrolled in college preparatory curriculums while 40% are not.  There is a 14% drop-out rate for African-Americans.
