Unless otherwise specified, the PFMF classes will take place in PSA 230 (Math Department Conference Room).Joint sessions with the Graduate College PFF will be in red and will be held in the Agriculture Building, Room 150 unless specified otherwise.

August 29, 2003, 2:40 p.m. - Introductory Meeting.  Introduction of participants and project.  Report on previous PFMF activities.  PSA 230.

September 5, 2003, 2:40-4:30 p.m. - Faculty Role at ASU Math Department.  Panel discussion with Andrew Bremner (Chair) and a member of the Personnel Committee, Professor Jack Spielberg.

 

September 12, 2003 (Friday), 4:00-6:00 p.m. PFF Opening Fall Reception, Memorial Union, Alumni Lounge (second floor).

 

September 19, 2003, 2:40 p.m. -4:30 p.m. Grant Writing Workshop I (Rosie Renaut).  Funding opportunities on the local, private and federal level.  Students will initiate a proposal that will be reviewed by the group in the spring semester and will eventually be submitted.

 

September 26, 2003, 2:40-4:30 p.m.  - Visit to Scottsdale Community College. 

Faculty roles at Scottsdale Community College and project planning session.

 

October 3, 2003 - Open

 

October 10, 2003, 2:40-4:30 p.m. - Job Search Part I: Planning Ahead  (Matthias Kawski).  Start early – begin to collect items for a successful application, including an impressive curriculum vita.  Identify still missing items (workshops to attend, contacts to make, projects to complete and manuscripts to submit, etc.).  Study the market, identify different career paths and tailor materials and activities still to be undertaken for prospective employers.  Brainstorm items for content and presentation of teaching and research statements.  Reading: "The Academic Job Search in Mathematics" by T. October 17, 2003, 2:40-4:30 p.m. - SUMS Institute and the Math Science Honors Program, Katie Sisulak, Assistant Director.  Minority issues for science and mathematics in the U.S.  Opportunities for PFMF students to participate in the activities of the SUMS Institute. 

 

October 24, 2003 – Social event/happy hours.  Details to follow.

 

October 31, 2003, 2:00-4:30 p.m.Mock Interviews – Graduate College Event AG 150,

Seminar: Preparing for the Academic Job Search & Interview. Faculty members who have served on search committees will interview participants for actual advertised positions in their field; interviews will be followed by feedback to the applicants and a question and answer session with the audience.

 

November 7, 2003, 2:40-4:30 p.m. Job Interviewing Experiences.  Professor Michael Oehrtman, a new hire in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, and Dr. Rama Chidambaram, recent Ph.D. graduate of our department and former PFMF student, will discuss their experiences on the interview circuit.

 

November 14, 2003, 2:40-4:30 p.m. – Job Search Part II (Steve Kaliszewski).  How to interview at the AMS joint meetings.

 

November 21,  2003 – Visit to Northern Arizona University.

 

December 5, 2003, 2:40-4:30 p.m. - Project Updates with Dr. Armbruster.  Students will schedule individual sessions to discuss their project plans and progress to date.

Job Search Part III (Anne Gelb).  Presentation and critique of curriculum vitae, teaching and research statements, timetables, and findings about possible employers.  On campus interviews.

 

Grant Writing Workshop, Part II

Students will research costs and sources of funding and submit proposals to attend various conferences and for summer support.

 

Professor Terrence Blows, NAU

Professor Blows will present NAU’s summer REU program and how the PFMF students can assist with this project.

 

March 16-23, 2004/Spring Break

 

April 21, 2004, 2:00 – 4:00pm

Capstone Fair (Ventana Room, Memorial Union)

Presentations of mentoring experiences presented by the second-year Graduate College PFF participants and the Math PFMF students. This fair provides a concrete presentation of the nuts and bolts of the mentoring experiences with suggestions, tips, and setbacks.

 

May 12, 2004, 5:00-7:00.m. - Graduation Reception at the Dixie Gammage Secret Garden
