Unless otherwise specified, the PFMF classes will take place in PSA 230 (Math Department Conference Room). Joint sessions with the Graduate College PFF will be in red.


Module 1 : Exploratory pase - Fall 2004

September 9, 2004 (Thursday), 4:00-6:00 p.m. PFF Opening Fall Reception, University Club.

 

September 10, 2004, 2:00 p.m. - Introductory Meeting.  Introduction of participants and project.  Report on previous PFMF activities.  PSA 230.

 

September 17, 2004, 2:30-400 p.m. - Faculty Role at ASU Math Department.  Panel discussion with Andrew Bremner (Chair) and a member of the Personnel Committee.

 

September 24, 2004, 2:30 p.m. -4:00 p.m. Grant Writing Workshop I (Dieter Armbruster).  Funding opportunities on the local, private and federal level.  Students will initiate a proposal that will be reviewed by the group in the spring semester and will eventually be submitted.

 

October 1, 2004, 2:30-4:30 p.m.  - Visit to Scottsdale Community College (Tentative Date). 

Faculty roles at Scottsdale Community College and project planning session.

 

October 8, 2004, 2:30-3:30 p.m. - Job Search Part I: Planning Ahead  (Matthias Kawski).  Start early – begin to collect items for a successful application, including an impressive curriculum vita.  Identify still missing items (workshops to attend, contacts to make, projects to complete and manuscripts to submit, etc.).  Study the market, identify different career paths and tailor materials and activities still to be undertaken for prospective employers.  Brainstorm items for content and presentation of teaching and research statements.  Reading: "The Academic Job Search in Mathematics" by T. October 15, 20042:30-4:00 p.m. - Job Search Part II and Job Interviewing Experiences.  Professor Sharon Crook, a new hire in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, and Dr. Shelly Smith, recent Ph.D. graduate of our department and former PFMF student, will discuss their experiences on the interview circuit.  Also, how to interview at the AMS joint meetings.

 

October 22, 2004, 2:30-4:00 p.m. - SUMS Institute, the Math Science Honors Program, MTBI (Carlos Castillo-Chavez).  Minority issues for science and mathematics in the U.S.  Opportunities for PFMF students to participate in the activities of the SUMS Institute and MTBI. 

 

October 29, 2004 – Visit to NAU (Dieter Armbruster).  NAU’s summer REU program and how the PFMF students can assist with this project.

 

 

November 5, 20042:00-5:00 p.m. Visit to ASU East with Division of Graduate Studies PFF group.

 

November 12, 2004 – Open.

 

November 19, 2004, (time?) – Mock Interviews – Division of Graduate Studies Event COOR 199.  Faculty members who have served on search committees will interview participants for actual advertised positions in their field; interviews will be followed by feedback to the applicants and a question and answer session with the audience.  There will be two mock interviews; one with Dieter Armbruster and a math student and the other Deborah Losse.

 

November 26, 2004, Thanksgiving Holiday – no meeting.

 

December 3, 2004 – Visit to Harvey Mudd (Matthias Kawski).

 

December 10, 2004, 2:30-3:30 p.m. - Project Updates with Dr. Armbruster.  Students will schedule individual sessions to discuss their project plans and progress to date.

April 29, 2005, 3:30 – 6:00pm

Capstone Fair and Graduation (Memorial Union)

Presentations of mentoring experiences presented by the second-year Division of Graduate Studies PFF participants and the Math PFMF students. This fair provides a concrete presentation of the nuts and bolts of the mentoring experiences with suggestions, tips, and setbacks.  Graduation at the conclusion.
