Fall 2005

 

 

August 26, 2005, 2:00 p.m. - Introductory Meeting.  Introduction of participants and project.  Report on previous PFMF activities.  PSA 230.

 

September 8, 2005 (Thursday), 4:00-6:00 p.m. PFF Opening Fall Reception, Cowley Lobby Music Building.

 

September 16, 2005, 1:30-3:00 p.m. - Faculty Role at ASU Math Department.  Panel discussion with Dieter Armbruster (Chair) and a member of the Personnel Committee (Steve Baer).

 

September 23, 2005, 1:30-3:00 p.m. - Job Search Part I: Planning Ahead  (Anne Gelb & Matthias Kawski).  Start early - begin to collect items for a successful application, including an impressive curriculum vita.  Identify still missing items (workshops to attend, contacts to make, projects to complete and manuscripts to submit, etc.).  Study the market, identify different career paths and tailor materials and activities still to be undertaken for prospective employers.  Brainstorm items for content and presentation of teaching and research statements.  Reading: "The Academic Job Search in Mathematics" by T. September 30, 2005, 2:30-4:30 p.m. - Visit to Scottsdale Community College

Faculty roles at Scottsdale Community College and project planning session.

 

October 7, 2005 - 2:00-5:00 p.m. Visit to ASU East with Division of Graduate Studies PFF group.

 

October 14, 2005 - 1:30-3:00 p.m. - Grant Writing Workshop I.  Funding opportunities on the local, private and federal level.  Students will initiate a proposal that will be reviewed by the group in the spring semester and will eventually be submitted.

 

October 21, 2005 - Open

 

October 28, 2005 - Visit to NAU (Tentative).  NAU's summer REU program and how the PFMF students can assist with this project.

 

November 4, 2005 - Job Search Part II and Job Interviewing Experiences.  ASU graduate Shelley Smith shares her experiences with the job search.

 

November 5, 2005 - (Saturday) Division of Graduate Studies PFF fall picnic.

 

November 11, 2005 - Veteran's Day Holiday – no meeting.

 

Need Date: , 2005, (time?) - Mock Interviews – Division of Graduate Studies Event COOR 199.  Faculty members who have served on search committees will interview participants for actual advertised positions in their field; interviews will be followed by feedback to the applicants and a question and answer session with the audience.  There will be two mock interviews; one with Dieter Ambruster and a math student and the other Deborah Losse.

 

November 18, 2005, 1:30-3:00 p.m. - SUMS Institute, the Math Science Honors Program, MTBI (Carlos Castillo-Chavez).  Minority issues for science and mathematics in the U.S.  Opportunities for PFMF students to participate in the activities of the SUMS Institute and MTBI. 

 

November 25, 2005, Thanksgiving Holiday - no meeting.

 

December 2, 2005, 2:30-3:30 p.m. - Project Updates with Matthias Kawski.  Students will schedule individual sessions to discuss their project plans and progress to date.

 

December 9, 2005 - Open (second day of final exams).

Individual Projects Continue

 

March 12-19, 2006/Spring Break

 

April 24, 2006, 3:30 - 6:00pm - Capstone Fair and Graduation (Memorial Union)

Presentations of mentoring experiences presented by the second-year Division of Graduate Studies PFF participants and the Math PFMF students. This fair provides a concrete presentation of the nuts and bolts of the mentoring experiences with suggestions, tips, and setbacks.  Graduation at the conclusion.

 

May 1 - Visit to Harvey Mudd College (Steve Kaliszewski)

Job Search Part III (Matthias Kawski).  Presentation and critique of curriculum vitae, teaching and research statements, timetables, and findings about possible employers.  On campus interviews.
